Communication 101 – Moving Your Audience

With all of the noise in the marketplace, how are you differentiating yourself?

You don’t have to be louder, you have to be more compelling.

In order to create a message that moves the audience, you need to ensure there will be engagement.

Engagement starts with a vision, or emotion and ends with a solution.

Developing Your Vision

Basically your audience wants a story, that stimulates all the senses preferably – so playing with words helps, and leaving out pronouns would be sensational.

Walking down the busy street, stares darting like cars on the freeway, shoppers hurrying past brush shoulders, distracted by the smell of musky masculine cologne, striking was his presence.

Whilst this may seem appealing, the details may not always be necessary.

Leaving out personal pronouns helps your audience personalise the experience, although they are just listening.

However, a vision should be something positive, and relatable to the audience, or they could lose interest. But there are other ways to lose your listeners…

Emotions That Move the Audience

If you aren’t communicating with an emotion that moves them, you are probably not altering any internal drives – motivation being key. Emotion fuels action, so in its absence, your message will not resonate with your audience.

Emotion can be shared through both verbal and non-verbal mediums.

For instance, verbal communication includes the tone of voice, choice of words, the directness of the message, and the speed of the voice. However non-verbals include, eye contact, body posture, and hand movements.

Phrases can’t create panic, calm, frustration or even discontent to name a few.

However, the vision and the emotion comes alive when it is aligned with an actionable sentence, or phrase.

Presenting Solutions

Solutions can be presented with in the next step or next action, so that the message has a direction and a focus for the audience.

Let’s try to finish what we started. We have the vision – the end in mind, but in order to get there, we must use the emotion to drive the next step of action.

Many compelling messages are geared to target an audience that may have different personal values, however, there may be a reason that they are either listening to you or engaging with you.

Tips on presenting on this topic.

Find your audience’s why for e.g. what have you promoted about yourself and what are they hoping to gather from your extensive knowledge or experience. What is their crisis, or worst case scenario thought.

Knowing where they are in thought, how they feel and what are their obstacles – you can use a more positive emotion and improve the motivational level.

Use ice-breakers or open conversation with less intense subject matter.

Try to find common ground and make sure expectations match the objectives of your lesson plan.

Make sure you have the enthusiasm to engage your audience, and open dialogue.


Dont use slides with too many words, or numbers, small font size or poor background.

Do not read from your slides, without making eye contact with your audience.


Elaborate on points and use photos or videos to maintain focus.
